Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, signaling early political alignment within the ruling party.

The endorsement came on 27th April 2026 during a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the state’s top office before cabinet members and party leaders.

Speaking after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said, “We just received Mr Deputy who came with a strong delegation of leaders to formally inform us of his intention to contest.”

He added that the decision to back Hamzat was widely supported, noting that “it was unanimous among us that the deputy governor is fit and well-prepared for this role.”

The governor also described his deputy as experienced and dependable, saying he “has demonstrated integrity, loyalty and commitment at the highest level” after working closely with him for about seven years.

Sanwo-Olu further emphasized Hamzat’s readiness, describing him as “fit and well-prepared for this job,” and someone who understands the workings of government and leadership responsibilities.

The meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council, the Governance Advisory Council, and other key stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos.

In recent weeks, Hamzat has also received endorsements from political figures and community leaders across the state, strengthening his early bid ahead of party primaries.

In an X post following the governor's endorsement, Hamzat shared his appreciation and promise to build on their work together, saying, "Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

"We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly.

"I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together, and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose."
