Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across the state, as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding and improve the justice system.

The decision was announced by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), who said the move is part of ongoing reforms in the justice sector.

Pedro explained that the release was carried out using the governor’s constitutional powers.

“The decision to release inmates… was taken pursuant to the power of prerogative of mercy,” he said.

He added that those freed were carefully selected.

“The released inmates were duly recommended by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy,” he said, noting that proper legal steps were followed.

The commissioner said the action shows the government’s commitment to fairness and better prison conditions.

“This exercise reflects the State Government’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice… and addressing overcrowding,” he added.

He also linked the move to efforts to speed up court processes, saying it would help ease the movement of inmates to and from courts.

Pedro revealed that the state has taken other steps, including providing buses to transport inmates and renovating correctional facilities.

He recalled that 91 inmates were released in December 2025, showing that the government is continuing its reform efforts.

The Lagos government says it remains committed to balancing public safety, justice for victims, and the rehabilitation of offenders.
