Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, representing President Bola Tinubu.
The presidency said Tinubu mandated Shettima to represent him at the annual gathering of world leaders.
Shettima will lead a high-level delegation that includes Rivers State Gov. Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Gov. Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.
The General Debate is scheduled for 22nd to 28th September under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communication in the Office of the Vice President, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement.
The statement said he will outline Nigeria’s position on issues linked to “national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.”
Shettima is also expected to take part in high-level meetings on the Right to Development, climate action and other issues important to Nigeria and Africa.
He will also participate in bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners.
The presidency said the engagements will provide Nigeria an opportunity to “advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy” and “deepen strategic partnerships.”
They will also seek to strengthen Nigeria’s voice on reform of the global financial system, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.
The development comes after Nigeria’s U.N. envoy, Jimoh Ibrahim, said in July that Tinubu had confirmed plans to attend the 81st UNGA.
Tinubu attended the 78th session in person, while Shettima represented him at the 79th and 80th sessions.
