Six opposition political parties have begun consultations with five presidential candidates to strengthen cooperation and develop a common strategy ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

The discussions involved the national chairmen and secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

The candidates consulted were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde of the APM, former Anambra State Gov. Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and former Cross River State Gov. Donald Duke of the PRP.

Salihu Lukman, who issued a statement Wednesday on behalf of the coalition parties, said the consultations followed resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit.

The summit called for stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties to defend multiparty democracy and protect Nigerians’ interests.

“The consultations represent a practical step towards giving effect to those resolutions,” the statement said.

It added that the meetings would allow party leaders and candidates to discuss ways to work together, identify shared interests and develop a common democratic agenda ahead of the election.

“The challenges confronting Nigeria demand serious engagement across party lines,” the statement said.

The coalition also stressed that political leaders should put the country’s future and citizens’ welfare above personal and party interests.

“Nigerians deserve political leaders who are prepared to place the country’s future, the wellbeing of its citizens and the credibility of its elections above narrow interests,” the statement added.

The consultations are still ongoing, according to Lukman, who said further meetings would build on the summit’s resolutions.

“Nigerians will be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progress,” he said.

No agreement on a single opposition presidential candidate has been announced.
