Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have killed several terrorists and intercepted a suspected courier carrying 180 explosives in Zamfara State, the military said Saturday.
The Joint Task Force North West said the operations were carried out Friday as troops stepped up their offensive against terrorist groups in the region.
Troops of Sector 2 conducting a clearance operation in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area engaged terrorists in a firefight around Garin Kaso.
“Two terrorists were confirmed neutralized during the initial encounter,” the task force said.
The troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles, according to the statement signed by Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, the task force’s media information officer.
The military said another group of terrorists later tried to ambush the troops from concealed positions.
“The troops responded decisively and successfully fought through the ambush, inflicting further casualties on the terrorists and forcing the surviving elements to flee,” it said.
The exact number of casualties from the second encounter was not immediately known.
However, the military said community reports indicated that several wounded terrorists and bodies of those killed were taken away by fleeing fighters.
In a separate operation, troops conducting vehicle checks intercepted 57-year-old Sani Umar, who was described as a suspected arms and explosives courier.
A search of his vehicle led to the recovery of “180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives,” the military said.
The explosives were allegedly being moved from Gusau, Zamfara, to terrorist elements in Jibia, Katsina State.
“The Theatre Command remains resolute in sustaining the momentum of ongoing operations,” the statement said.
“Theatre Command” refers to the military command overseeing the operation.
