Two separate fire incidents in Ikorodu and Surulere areas of Lagos State have destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said Monday.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement, saying the first fire occurred in the early hours of Monday at Adamo Bus Stop, Ikorodu.
According to him, the fire, suspected to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, started at a hairdressing shop before spreading to adjoining shops.
Three shops were affected.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the fire originated from a spark from electrical wiring which ignited the roof of a hairdressing shop and spread to adjoining shops,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He said LASEMA responders and officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service from Imota quickly brought the fire under control and completely extinguished it.
Oke-Osanyintolu said dampening-down operations were carried out to prevent the fire from starting again.
He added that no death or injury was recorded.
The second incident occurred Monday morning at 19 Olatunde Onimole Street, near Bakery Bus Stop, Surulere.
The fire affected two shops dealing in furniture and provisions.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the cause of the fire had not been determined, adding that both shops were completely destroyed along with their contents.
He said there were no deaths or injuries in the Surulere incident and that responders also carried out dampening-down operations to prevent a resurgence.
The LASEMA permanent secretary also reported several other emergencies handled by the agency between Sunday and Monday.
They included a truck carrying soft drinks that broke down at Olupese Bus Stop, inward Cappa, and obstructed traffic. Responders worked with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police to remove the truck.
“The truck was successfully recovered to a lay-by, restoring free flow of traffic,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said an overturned commercial bus on the Third Mainland Bridge and a broken-down tanker on Ilupeju Road were also handled by emergency teams.
He said the Lagos State Government remained committed to protecting lives and property through investment in personnel, equipment and decentralised emergency response units.
The agency urged residents to observe electrical safety standards and properly maintain vehicles to help prevent avoidable emergencies.
