A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and sparked a fire at a major oil refinery in southern Russia on Sunday, as both sides continued long-range strikes more than four years into the war.
Russian authorities said the attack targeted the Krasnodar region, where debris from intercepted drones hit the Slavyansk-na-Kubani oil refinery.
Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said one person was killed and another was injured during what he described as “a massive enemy drone attack.”
He added that “a fire also broke out at an oil refinery in the city, and a power line and gas pipe were damaged.”
The refinery is one of southern Russia's largest oil-processing facilities and supplies petroleum products for export through Black Sea ports.
Ukraine confirmed it carried out the strike.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation was part of Kyiv's campaign to weaken Russia's ability to continue the war.
“Tonight, our ‘long-range sanctions’ reached two oil refineries in Russia,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
“Each strike means a reduction in the resources that fuel the Russian war machine, and another step toward peace.”
Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 213 Ukrainian drones across more than a dozen regions, including around Moscow.
Ukraine, meanwhile, said it intercepted most of the drones and missiles launched by Russia overnight.
The latest attacks highlight the growing use of long-range drones by both countries.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil depots and refineries in recent months, saying the facilities help finance Moscow's military campaign.
Russia has continued near-daily missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
