A United States lawmaker, Congressman Chris Smith, has raised alarm over the recent wave of killings in Plateau State, describing the attacks as part of a “deeply disturbing pattern.”

Smith’s comments follow a series of deadly incidents, including Palm Sunday attacks in Jos and surrounding communities, where dozens of people were reportedly killed by gunmen.

In a statement, the lawmaker said the timing of the attacks raises serious concerns.

“The fact that such atrocities are repeated year after year on the same holy day underscores the urgent need for decisive action,” he said.

He called on the Nigerian government to step up security, especially during religious periods.

“I urge the Government of Nigeria to take immediate and concrete steps to ensure the safety and security of all Christian communities,” Smith added.

The lawmaker stressed that protecting citizens is a constitutional duty.

“The Nigerian government has a fundamental responsibility… to protect all its citizens, regardless of their faith,” he said.

The attacks are part of a broader pattern of insecurity in Nigeria’s north-central region, where communal clashes and armed groups have led to repeated bloodshed.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has described the violence as terrorism and says efforts are ongoing to identify those responsible.

Security agencies have since increased patrols in affected areas, while community leaders continue to call for calm.
