IFAB Admits Embolo Red Card Error After VAR Controversy

Football’s law-making body, the International Football Association Board, has confirmed that Switzerland forward Breel Embolo should not have been sent off during his side’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final clash against Argentina national football team.

The incident occurred in the 72nd minute, shortly after Switzerland had levelled the score at 1-1.

Embolo was initially awarded a foul following a challenge from Leandro Paredes, who was shown a yellow card by referee Joao Pinheiro.

However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned.

Paredes’ booking was rescinded, and Embolo was instead shown a yellow card for simulation, his second of the match, resulting in his dismissal.

Argentina went on to win the game 3-1 after extra time, with the red card widely seen as a turning point in the encounter.

IFAB later clarified that the VAR intervention misapplied the “mistaken identity” rule.

According to the Laws of the Game, the rule is only intended to correct situations where the wrong player is penalised for an offence.

It does not allow officials to review or change the nature of the offence itself.

In this case, VAR effectively reinterpreted the incident from a foul to simulation, which falls outside the current protocol.

IFAB stated that while such use of VAR was trialled during the tournament, it is not permitted under the existing rules until a formal review is concluded.

This means that although Paredes’ yellow card could have been withdrawn, Embolo should not have been issued a second yellow card or sent off.

Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin criticised the decision after the match, describing it as one that “destroyed” his team’s chances in a game they were still firmly contesting.

The incident has since sparked widespread debate across the football community, particularly given its impact on the outcome of a crucial knockout fixture involving Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

IFAB confirmed that a broader review of VAR protocols is ongoing, with cases like Embolo’s expected to influence future interpretations of the law.

Until any amendments are officially adopted, referees are expected to apply the current guidelines, limiting VAR’s role in mistaken identity situations strictly to identifying the correct player, not altering the offence itself.

The controversy once again highlights the challenges surrounding VAR consistency at major tournaments, raising further questions about how far the technology should be allowed to influence key decisions in high-stakes matches.
