Morocco underlined their growing status on the world stage after holding Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, delivering another statement performance against one of football’s traditional powers.

The Atlas Lions looked composed and fearless for long stretches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and came closest to leaving with all three points before Brazil goalkeeper Alisson produced late saves to preserve the result.

Morocco struck first in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari after a sharp attacking move led by Brahim Diaz.

Saibari finished calmly over Alisson to reward a lively opening spell in which the African side pressed aggressively and controlled midfield areas.

Brazil eventually responded through Vinícius Júnior, whose individual brilliance produced an equaliser in the 32nd minute.

But despite Brazil’s greater possession, Morocco remained organised and dangerous, creating the clearer late opportunities.

After the match, Vinícius admitted Brazil had escaped with a point and promised improvement as the tournament continues.

“We know we have to improve,” he said.

“This is only the beginning and we will work to respond in the next game.”

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti also acknowledged his team struggled and defended his decision not to introduce Endrick during the contest.

“I am not disappointed and I am not satisfied,” Ancelotti said.

“The first half lacked balance and intensity.

"We improved later.”

On Endrick’s absence, Ancelotti suggested tactical considerations guided his choices as Brazil searched for control rather than additional attacking changes.

For Morocco, however, the result felt bigger than a point.

The Atlas Lions showed once again that African teams are no longer arriving at the World Cup simply to compete but to challenge football’s established order.
