President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.
In a statement Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the reform must address longstanding weaknesses in the governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability of Nigerian football.
The president said football has continued to struggle despite progress recorded in other sports since the re-establishment of the National Sports Commission, attributing the challenges to structural weaknesses within the system.
He said Nigeria’s football system must better match the country’s talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.
Tinubu directed the chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad, consultative reform process.
The process is also expected to include engagement with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football while preserving Nigeria’s obligations under the international football framework.
The president called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work toward building a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.
