IWD 2026: Oluremi Tinubu, Seun Aiyedatiwa Call for Women's Empowerment

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Seun Aiyedatiwa, have called for increased efforts to empower women and girls, describing it as critical to national development and societal progress.

In separate messages to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, the two leaders urged Nigerians to recognise the vital contributions of women and promote opportunities that enable them to thrive across different sectors.

In a message shared on her X handle on Sunday, she joined Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the achievements and resilience of women and girls.

She highlighted the theme of this year’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” noting that empowering women is essential for building stronger families and a more inclusive nation.

According to her, empowering women should not be seen as an act of charity but rather as a strategic investment in the country’s future.

She stated that when women are provided access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms, justice, and equity, the benefits extend to families, communities, and the nation as a whole.

“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” the First Lady added while extending goodwill to women across the country in celebration of the global event.

Also speaking on the occasion, Ondo State First Lady Seun Aiyedatiwa emphasised the importance of mentorship and collaboration among women, urging them to continue supporting one another to create opportunities for future generations.

In a message posted on her Facebook page, she noted that women in Ondo State have remained key drivers of progress in areas ranging from agriculture and commerce to education and public service.

Aiyedatiwa encouraged women to mentor younger girls and uplift one another, stressing that such efforts would strengthen families and communities.

She said, “When women empower one another, families prosper, communities thrive, and the entire state moves forward.”

Both First Ladies reaffirmed the pivotal role women play in shaping the nation’s present and future, urging continued efforts toward gender equality and inclusive development.
