UEFA Champions League: Chelsea Knocked Out As Spanish Teams Advance

Defending champions of the Champions League, Chelsea, got knocked out of the competition on Tuesday night after a 5-4 aggregate loss to Real Madrid.

The Blues lost the first leg 3-1 and looked set to pull off a spirited comeback after goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner gave the London side a 3-0 lead on the night.

The Los Blancos however, had other plans as Rodrygo Goes pulled a goal back in the 80th minute, to force extra time.

Madrid’s first leg hero, Karim Benzema, ultimately called the game, sending his side to the semi-finals, with a well-placed header in the first half of extra-time after a misplaced pass from the Chelsea midfield.

In Germany, Bayern Munich failed to make their home advantage pay as a late goal from Nigerian Samuel Chukwueze saw the Yellow Submarine draw 1-1  on the night and emerge victorious 2-1 on aggregate.

Robert Lewandoski scored his 13th champions league goal of the season as Bayern looked certain to qualify but a swift counter-attacking move saw Gerard Moreno square the ball to Chukwueze who fired past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Sportscasters Anthony Dimwaka, Adaeze Michael, and David Okwara spoke on Football Frenzy on Nigeria Info 99.3 FM Lagos, giving their verdicts on the night’s action.

Adaeze Michael believes Chelsea put up a spirited performance.

She stated that the only difference between this team and last year’s was the defensive solidity which was missing on the night.

David Okwara on the other hand said it could have gone either way, but Real Madrid showed that they do not have to do much to win.

He also added that Chelsea displayed a proper performance, showing they would surely be one of the favourites next year.

Real Madrid would face the winner between Atletico Madrid vs Man City while Villarreal would slug it out against the Liverpool vs Benfica tie winner.
