Adelabu Resigns as Power Minister to Pursue Oyo Governorship Bid

Adelabu submits resignation letter to George Akume, the SGF

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally resigned from his position in the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The resignation, confirmed on Wednesday, follows weeks of speculation over Adelabu’s political plans and consultations within the presidency.

Adelabu’s decision comes despite an earlier March 31 deadline set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for political appointees seeking elective office to resign.

In explaining his move, Adelabu said his resignation was necessary to allow him to dedicate “time and resources” to the Oyo governorship race, marking a transition from federal responsibilities to state-level politics.

His renewed ambition follows earlier uncertainty about whether he would join the race after initially missing the resignation deadline.

Adelabu’s resignation adds to a growing list of political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, as key figures reposition for state and national contests.

His exit also comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s power sector, which continues to face challenges such as grid instability, supply shortfalls, and tariff controversies.

Discussions within policy circles have also emerged around reforms in the energy sector, including proposals linked to restructuring ministerial oversight to improve coordination across Nigeria’s power and energy landscape.
