Airlines Threaten Shutdown Over Soaring Jet Fuel Prices

There’s growing tension in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Airlines are warning they may shut down operations from April 20 if nothing is done about the rising cost of jet fuel.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria says the price of Jet A1 has jumped sharply — from about ₦900 per litre in February to over ₦3,300 in just a few weeks.

That’s more than a 300 percent increase.

The group describes the spike as artificial and far above global trends, warning that airlines can no longer sustain operations at that rate.

According to the operators, they’ve been absorbing the cost for weeks, but say it’s no longer viable.

They also revealed that at least one airline has already grounded its operations, with more at risk if the situation continues.

The group is accusing fuel marketers of putting the industry under pressure and says a shutdown could disrupt travel, affect jobs, and even impact national security.

They’ve now issued what they call a final appeal, urging authorities and stakeholders to step in before the situation escalates
