The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has accused African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of alleged irregularities surrounding the stalled Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba State.
The council’s spokesman, Dele Alake, alleged that Atiku, who was Vice-President under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, influenced the award of the project to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited despite concerns over the company’s capacity.
Alake also alleged that Atiku’s former wife, Jennifer Douglas, received $500,000 from an offshore account linked to Sunrise promoter, Leno Adesanya, months before the contract was reportedly awarded.
He said the transaction and other financial dealings involving Atiku and his associates were examined in proceedings linked to the Mambilla project.
The allegations followed a recent International Chamber of Commerce arbitration ruling in which the tribunal rejected Sunrise’s claims against Nigeria over the project.
The dispute included claims for hundreds of millions of dollars as well as a separate compensation claim exceeding $2.7bn.
Alake further alleged that Atiku and former Power Minister, Olu Agunloye, acted against the position of the Federal Executive Council and the Obasanjo administration over the project.
He said the issues raised by the arbitration should concern Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election and urged Atiku to withdraw from the race.
Atiku has previously denied corruption-related allegations against him, while the latest claims by Alake remain politically and legally disputed.
