Tobi Amusan delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, winning the women’s 100m hurdles on Day 2 of competition.

The world record holder led the field convincingly, reinforcing her dominance on the continent and adding another major title to her growing medal collection.

Her victory marks her third African Championships gold medal.

Nigeria also celebrated a strong showing in the same event, with compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo securing the bronze medal to further boost the country’s early performance at the championships.

The gold medal was presented to Amusan by World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, highlighting the significance of her achievement on the continental stage.

Speaking ahead of the race, Amusan urged emerging athletes to remain confident in their ambitions despite doubts or external discouragement.

“Don’t let anyone talk fear into your dreams,” she said.

Reflecting on her own journey into hurdling, she noted that early skepticism about African hurdlers only strengthened her resolve, adding that she now stands as the world record holder.

Nigeria’s medal haul on Day 1 and Day 2 has positioned the team among the early standouts of the championships, with expectations of further podium finishes as the competition continues.
