Appeal Court Upholds PDP Officers’ Suspensions, Bars INEC from Recognising Ibadan Convention

The Court of Appeal of Nigeria in Abuja has delivered two major rulings affecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the first decision, the court upheld the suspension of several national officers, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and National Legal Adviser Kamaladeen Ajibade, SAN.

The appellate court dismissed their legal challenges and affirmed the authority of the party’s PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to discipline its members. The suspensions followed allegations of anti-party activities and conduct considered inconsistent with party rules.

In a separate ruling, the court also affirmed a lower court judgment restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held on November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The three-member panel of justices dismissed the party’s appeal as meritless and frivolous, resolving all four issues raised against the convention.

The court also awarded ₦2 million in costs to the opposing party.
