A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a suit filed by the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, seeking the disqualification of President Bola Tinubu from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The suit challenges Tinubu’s eligibility over an alleged discrepancy in the name appearing on his National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
At the hearing, counsel to Atiku, Joseph Onu, told the court that he had been unable to personally serve Tinubu with the originating summons and sought permission to serve him directly or through substituted service.
Attempts by counsel to the president to receive the court documents were rejected by Onu, who insisted that the defendant must be personally served or served through an approved substituted method.
Atiku, who filed the suit Friday, is asking the court to determine whether the alleged discrepancy affects Tinubu’s constitutional qualification to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The plaintiffs allege that the NYSC certificate submitted to INEC bears the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle,” while the president’s official name is “Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Justice Inyang Ekwo, after hearing from the parties, adjourned the case until Sept. 28 for further mention.
Tinubu defeated Atiku in the 2023 presidential election and is seeking another term under the All Progressives Congress, while Atiku is the presidential candidate of the ADC.
