Chelsea’s Famous CFC Makes Historic Lagos Debut, Hinting at Nigerian Signing

Chelsea Football Club has taken a significant step in engaging its Nigerian fanbase, as its globally recognised supporter initiative, The Famous CFC, made its debut in Lagos.

The landmark event, held at the Hard Rock Cafe, drew a large turnout of supporters for a day of interaction, celebration, and football, marking the club’s first-ever edition of the programme in Nigeria.

Chelsea remains one of the most widely supported clubs in Africa, with Nigeria consistently ranked among their largest international fan markets, while the club boasts a global following that runs into hundreds of millions across digital platforms.

The event featured a press conference, fan engagement activities, and a watch party for Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield, which ended in a 1–1 draw.

However, beyond the result on the pitch, it was the presence of former Chelsea forward and Super Eagles star Victor Moses that defined the occasion.

Nigeria Deserves This Recognition

Moses emphasised the importance of Chelsea’s decision to host the initiative in Nigeria, describing it as long overdue.

“Chelsea has one of the biggest fanbases in Nigeria and Africa, to be honest," he said.

"It’s essential for the club to build a deeper relationship with Nigerian fans.”

The former Premier League winner also called on other European clubs to strengthen their engagement with African supporters.

Chelsea have a long-standing connection with Nigerian players, with the likes of Mikel Obi, Celestine Babayaro, and Ola Aina having represented the club, alongside Moses himself.

The 33-year-old suggested that the trend could continue, hinting at the possibility of another Nigerian player joining the club.

“You never know what could happen next season, maybe they will sign another Nigerian player," said Moses.

"Let’s just wait and see. It’s Like Black Magic”

Moses also paid tribute to Nigerian fans, describing their passion as a unique source of motivation during his playing days.

“Nigeria has some of the best fans in the world. When I hear the drums and the energy from the stands, it gives me that extra push. It’s like black magic, the spirit just comes into me.”

Strategic Move by Chelsea

The Lagos event formed part of Chelsea’s expanded 2025/26 global tour for The Famous CFC, which has seen the club take its fan engagement platform across multiple regions, including Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and Europe.

Lagos becomes one of the few African cities to host the initiative, underlining Nigeria’s growing importance in Chelsea’s global strategy.

Fans in attendance also had the opportunity to win signed merchandise through raffle draws, adding to the excitement of the occasion.

For many supporters, the event went beyond fan engagement, representing long-awaited recognition from a club they have supported for decades.

From title-winning campaigns to challenging seasons, Nigerian fans have remained a constant presence in Chelsea’s global following, and Saturday’s event served as a rare moment of direct connection.

With one final stop remaining on the 2025/26 tour, Chelsea’s visit to Lagos may signal the beginning of a deeper and more consistent relationship with their Nigerian fanbase.
