Gov. Lawal Abolishes Cash Revenue Collection in Zamfara

Governor Dauda Lawal has ordered an immediate end to cash revenue collection in Zamfara State, directing all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt fully digital payment systems to curb leakages and improve transparency.

The directive was issued on Friday during a town hall meeting on the Nigeria Tax Reform Acts 2025, organised by the Zamfara State Internal Revenue Service in Gusau.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss implementation of the new tax framework and strategies for boosting internally generated revenue (IGR).

Lawal said the reforms aim to strengthen digital systems, harmonise revenue databases across MDAs, enable real-time monitoring, and improve inter-agency verification.

“Let me state clearly that revenue generation is a whole-of-government obligation, not a task for a single agency,” the governor said.

“Leakages, duplication, and informal collections undermine public confidence and will not be tolerated.”

He noted that the signing of the Repeal and Re-enactment of the Zamfara State Consolidated Revenue Law has empowered the revenue service with clearer authority for assessment, collection, and accounting of both tax and non-tax revenues.

Lawal added that all revenue-generating MDAs must review their laws and procedures to align with the new framework, remove overlaps, and ensure prompt remittance through approved digital channels.

“These reforms offer opportunity and responsibility, to build a modern, efficient revenue system that supports growth, protects taxpayers, and boosts investor confidence,” he said.

The governor disclosed that Zamfara’s 2025 IGR target stands between ₦38 billion and ₦42 billion, describing it as achievable under the expanded compliance regime.

Outstanding ministries and agencies were also recognised for excellence in revenue remittance during the event.
