At least 110 people have lost their lives following devastating floods caused by heavy rains in central Nigeria, officials confirmed.
The severe downpour, which lasted for several hours, led to widespread flooding in the town of Mokwa, Niger State. According to Abullahi Baba-Arah, head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the floodwaters submerged and destroyed more than 50 residential homes, displacing many families.
The Nigerian government has expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced that security and emergency agencies have been deployed to assist with ongoing search and rescue operations.
The worst affected areas are the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa districts of Mokwa. Local traditional ruler, District Head Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, described the floods as the worst the community has seen in 60 years.
Authorities warn that the search and rescue mission continues as many residents remain in danger due to the flooding.
Residents and aid agencies are calling for urgent support to help those displaced and prevent further loss of life.
