Democrats Push Bill Urging Trump to Recognize Palestinian State

Democrats have introduced a landmark resolution in the U.S. Senate urging President Donald Trump to recognize a demilitarized Palestinian state, consistent with the long-discussed two-state solution.

The resolution, spearheaded by Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, calls for recognition of Palestine while demanding Hamas end its “campaign of terrorism.” It frames recognition as both a moral obligation and a practical step toward lasting peace.

“This is a historic opportunity to build a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, dignity, and security,” Merkley said. “America has a responsibility to lead, and the time to act is now.”

Although the resolution faces little chance of passing in the Republican-controlled Congress and would likely face a veto from Trump, it comes as Israel faces mounting global criticism over its ongoing war in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, Gaza’s infrastructure has been devastated, with over 65,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, reported killed, and hundreds dying from malnutrition amid famine conditions.

Several nations, including Belgium, Spain, Norway, and Australia, have pledged to recognize Palestine during this month’s United Nations General Assembly, while the EU has proposed sanctions on Israel.

Israel has dismissed the push for recognition as anti-Semitism and a political win for Hamas, while rejecting accusations of war crimes and genocide.
