The Enugu State government has condemned the brutal killing of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, who was gunned down by unknown assailants on Friday, September 19.
The incident occurred along the Alumona–Eha Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area and has thrown the Catholic community and residents into mourning.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers ambushed the priest before shooting him at close range.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the state government described the murder as “cowardly and cold-blooded,” pledging that the killers would not escape justice.
“This government will not spare any resources—whether technology, intelligence, or manpower—in tracking down the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” Dr. Agbo said.
“The security of lives and property remains our utmost priority, and we will not relent until these criminals are brought to book.”
The government also commiserated with the family of the late priest, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the wider Catholic community over the tragedy.
As part of efforts to fast-track investigations, the Enugu State government announced a ₦10 million reward for credible information leading to the arrest of the killers.
