FG Launches National Digital Trustmark to Boost Online Transaction Confidence

The federal government has launched a National Digital Trustmark to enhance trust and transparency in Nigeria’s e-commerce sector.

The platform, unveiled on Thursday in Abuja by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), will serve as a verifiable certification badge for legitimate online businesses.

NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, said the initiative aims to curb online fraud and restore global confidence in Nigerian digital enterprises.

He explained that the trustmark will function as a security seal displayed on certified companies’ websites and documents, confirming their registration and physical presence in Nigeria.

While participation is voluntary, certification will attract a small fee and must be renewed annually.

The programme is supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

NACCIMA President Jani Ibrahim described it as a “major step toward building a safer, more trusted, and globally competitive digital economy.”

GIZ consultant Chinedu Albert noted that Nigeria’s $13 billion e-commerce market represents only 0.55 percent of global online trade, saying the trustmark will help local MSMEs compete globally by promoting transparency and credibility.
