FG May Demolish “Irredeemable” Carter Bridge

The federal government has declared the Carter Bridge in Lagos “irredeemable” following a comprehensive inspection, raising the likelihood of its demolition and replacement with a new structure.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, who led the inspection tour of the bridge on Wednesday, said the decision was informed by critical findings on its deteriorating condition.

“We had insisted that the situation of Carter Bridge is so critical, and it seems that all stakeholders have agreed that Carter Bridge is irredeemable," he said.

“But what we did today is to see whether we can salvage the ramps so that we cut down the cost of construction and the time of construction. That decision we could not take.”

While Carter Bridge faces demolition, the Minister ruled out the construction of a new Third Mainland Bridge, insisting instead on rehabilitation.

“The Ministry is not buying the idea of a fresh Third Mainland Bridge. We will do everything to do the rehabilitation of Third Mainland, and that is the decision.”

Beyond Lagos, the minister disclosed plans for a pioneering 2.9-kilometre underwater tunnel linking Ahmadu Bello Way to Snake Island and Badagry through a coastal route.

“When done, it’s going to be the first tunnel in Africa inside water,” he revealed, noting that the project would be funded through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

On enforcement, the Minister decried the dangerous practice of trucks and traders parking on bridges and major highways, stressing that it contributes to infrastructure failures.

“This is the reason why we have frequent damage to our roads and bridges. It is the responsibility of all of us to protect our national assets,” he warned.
