A fire broke out at the Nigeria Customs Service Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, on Monday, destroying property reportedly worth millions of naira.
The fire reportedly started at about 10:23 a.m. following an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading to other sections of the building.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Customs officers on duty attempted to contain the flames before personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 10:45 a.m.
Deputy Comptroller of Customs Timothy Jonah, who had just resumed duty to take over the command, described the incident as unfortunate.
“I just resumed duty to take over, only to witness this fire outbreak,” Jonah said.
He added that despite the setback, the incident presented an opportunity to strengthen the command’s operations and improve its safety measures.
Jonah announced that a committee would be established to investigate the cause of the fire.
He also commended the Customs personnel who initially responded to the outbreak and their collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The deputy comptroller said the command would strengthen its safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
