Flamingos Face Brazil In U-17 World Cup Semi-Final, Eye Historic First Final Appearance

Nigeria's Flamingos will take on Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco on Wednesday, November 4, with a place in the final at stake.

The Nigerian youngsters are bidding to reach the final of the competition for the first time in the country's history, having previously reached the semi-finals in 2022, when they finished third in India.

Head coach Hakeem Busari's side booked their place in the last four after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Sunday's quarter-final at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé.

With the encounter heading towards extra time, captain Azeezat Oduntan converted an 89th-minute penalty to give Nigeria the decisive goal. The spot-kick was awarded after Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the penalty area.

The victory was another important milestone for the Flamingos, who have now recorded four wins in the tournament, setting a new national record for the most victories by Nigeria at a single edition of the U-17 Women's World Cup.

Nigeria's journey in Morocco has not been without challenges. The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, but responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing an impressive 3-1 win against defending champions North Korea.

That result ended North Korea's 18-match unbeaten run in the competition and gave Nigeria a major boost heading into the knockout stages.

The Flamingos maintained their momentum with a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 before edging Venezuela to secure their semi-final ticket.

Standing between Nigeria and a historic final appearance, however, is a Brazilian side that has also demonstrated considerable resilience throughout the tournament.

Brazil booked their place in the semi-finals after coming from behind to defeat China 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Helena scored both goals, including the late winner that sent the South Americans into the last four.

Brazil had also survived a difficult Round of 16 encounter against Poland, advancing after an extraordinary 3-3 draw was settled by an 8-7 victory in the penalty shootout.

The South Americans have received goals from different players, with nine members of their squad finding the net at the tournament. Greise Kelly has been particularly influential, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

Brazil head coach Rilany Silva expects a difficult contest against Nigeria and has described the Flamingos as a physically strong team.

For Nigeria, goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho will again be important, while captain Oduntan and the team's attacking players will be expected to provide the threat going forward.

Busari has described reaching the semi-finals as a dream come true and says his team is determined to give its best and make the country proud.

The encounter is scheduled to take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat, with kick-off set for 6pm Moroccan time, 7pm in Nigeria.

A victory would take the Flamingos into their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final, where they would face either Japan or defending champions North Korea.

Having already overcome defending champions North Korea and negotiated difficult knockout matches against Mexico and Venezuela, Nigeria will be hoping to produce another memorable performance against Brazil.

The Flamingos are now one victory away from making history and giving Nigeria another opportunity to compete for a global football title.
