A coalition of 100 Nigerians under the banner of G-100 has urged opposition leaders to unite behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, warning that a divided opposition would struggle to defeat the ruling party.
In an open letter titled The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition, the group announced plans to convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within two weeks.
It said key opposition figures would be asked to decide whether their presidential ambitions are driven by personal interests or the broader goal of rescuing Nigeria.
The letter was signed by 100 individuals, including former APC National Vice Chairman Salihu Mohammed Lukman, former lawmaker Nnenna Ukeje, former Kogi Deputy Governor Simon Achuba and Akilu Indabawa.
It was addressed to opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola and others expected to play major roles in the 2027 elections.
According to the group, Nigeria's challenges are rooted in structural problems that reward patronage over merit and loyalty over accountability.
It argued that political reform is essential to addressing the country's economic and governance issues.
The coalition said the planned meeting would build on the Ibadan Declaration reached by opposition figures in April 2026 and work toward adopting a single presidential flagbearer.
It also called on civil society organisations, labour unions, religious leaders and professionals to support efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria's democracy and placing national interest above personal ambition.
