The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police across the country to immediately begin a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within their commands and formations.
The directive was issued during an emergency conference with police commissioners and journalists at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre in Abuja, according to the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu said the audit is aimed at strengthening accountability, identifying operational gaps, preventing misuse of police weapons and improving the force’s operational readiness.
The police chief described the exercise as more than a routine administrative process, saying it is intended to ensure that all arms and ammunition in police custody are properly documented, secured and deployed in line with operational standards and national security objectives.
Commissioners of Police were instructed to ensure the process is transparent and professionally documented, with detailed reports to be submitted to Force Headquarters within a specified timeframe.
Disu reiterated the force’s commitment to reforms focused on professionalism, accountability, transparency and stronger internal control systems.
The police said ongoing reforms under the current leadership are aimed at building a more disciplined and efficient institution capable of responding to evolving security challenges across the country.
