Immigration Service to Introduce Emergency Passport for Diaspora Nigerians

The Nigeria Immigration Service has announced a new Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) for Nigerians abroad who lose or misplace their passports

Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, announced this at the joint migration meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes in Abuja, co-hosted by Nigeria and France.

According to Nandap, STEP will replace the Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC).

This was contained in a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI A. S. Akinlabi.

She said the biometric passport will replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate and help Nigerians return home securely. The travel document will be issued at Nigerian embassies and consulates abroad and will be valid for single entry only.

According to her, “the initiative is part of ongoing reforms to strengthen identity management and border governance in line with global best practices.”

The statement also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to safe and orderly migration through stronger regional cooperation.

Nandap added that the Service will continue to align its operations with international standards to ensure efficient service delivery and robust identity protection.
