Kajuru Abductions: Eleven Escape as Governor Sani Visits Community, Police Step Up Rescue Efforts

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has visited Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area following the abduction of villagers, as security agencies confirmed that at least 11 victims have escaped from captivity and returned home safely.

The governor sympathised with residents during the visit and reassured them of the state government’s commitment to securing the release of those still held by the abductors. He reiterated a zero tolerance stance on insecurity and pledged sustained efforts to restore peace and safety across Kaduna State.

Earlier, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the abduction did occur after initial uncertainty caused by conflicting accounts from the community. Police said the Kaduna State Security Council, convened by the governor, received varying claims, prompting security agencies to verify details before making definitive public statements.

In a statement dated January 20, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said comments earlier attributed to the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, which were widely seen as a denial, were meant to prevent panic while facts were being established.

“Subsequent verification from operational units and intelligence sources has confirmed that the incident did occur,” the police said.

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the deployment of tactical and intelligence assets to Kajuru and surrounding areas, with intensified patrols and search and rescue operations ongoing.

Public attention intensified after former presidential candidate Peter Obi criticised the initial handling of the incident, citing reports that more than 150 worshippers were abducted from churches in the area. Police, however, say they have not confirmed that figure.

Authorities have urged the public and the media to rely on official updates and avoid speculation that could undermine rescue efforts or heighten anxiety.
