The Lagos State Government has directed communities operating gated streets to open their street gates daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. during the festive season to help ease traffic congestion across the state.
In a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the government said the directive is part of established state guidelines and aligns with its THEMES+ agenda, which prioritises free traffic flow, safety of lives and property, and enhanced ease of doing business in Lagos.
The statement also called on owners of gates and structures erected on public roads without prior approval from the Ministry of Transportation to remove them within seven days, warning that enforcement actions will be taken against defaulters.
While acknowledging the security benefits that gated streets can offer, the ministry stressed the importance of keeping roads accessible, especially during the festive period when increased travel, commercial activities, and tourism are expected to put extra pressure on the state’s road network.
The government said it remains committed to ensuring unrestricted access in and out of all gated streets to prevent traffic gridlock and safeguard residents and visitors throughout the holiday season and beyond.
