LASTMA Inducts 100 Volunteers to Ease Lagos Yuletide Traffic

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has inducted more than 100 volunteers into its traffic advocacy network to help manage expected congestion during the 2026 Yuletide season.

The volunteers were inducted into the LASTMA Mayors traffic advocacy network at a ceremony held at the agency’s headquarters in Lagos.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening community participation in traffic management, promoting compliance with road regulations and supporting officers on busy roads.

Speaking at the event, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said managing traffic in Lagos required collective responsibility rather than relying solely on government enforcement.

“Sustainable mobility governance relies on collective ownership, shared accountability, and the active participation of every citizen,” he said.

Bakare-Oki added that the volunteers would strengthen public education and support field operations through grassroots advocacy and voluntary interventions.

He described them as community ambassadors whose relationships with residents, transport operators and market associations could help improve road discipline.

The LASTMA boss also urged religious leaders to use their platforms to promote road safety.

He cautioned motorists against driving against traffic, speeding, reckless overtaking and indiscriminate parking.

“The commercial excitement and social festivities associated with December must not degenerate into traffic indiscipline or preventable road tragedies,” he said.

Also speaking, the agency’s Director of Traffic Advocacy and Special Mayors, Awoyemi Jimmy, assured residents that LASTMA would maintain surveillance and deploy officers along major traffic corridors throughout the festive period.

The Coordinator of the State Mayors of Traffic, Tajudeen Othman, pledged that the volunteers would perform their duties with integrity and discipline.

LASTMA has previously introduced special traffic operations, including round-the-clock monitoring and additional personnel deployment, to manage increased road use during the festive season.
