LASTMA to Introduce Short Code for Traffic Reporting in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says it will introduce a short code to allow residents, especially motorists, to report traffic conditions and interact with the agency more easily.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that the new system would replace the current long-digit call line.

Bakare-Oki said the short code, which is awaiting final approval from a network provider, would be toll-free and is expected to go live within two to three weeks.

He said installation of equipment for the service was ongoing, adding that the system would allow residents to report traffic congestion, emergencies, and officer conduct on the roads.

He also said LASTMA’s digital call centre currently has 10 responders and supports communication in Yoruba, English and other local languages.

According to him, the agency maintains close collaboration with emergency responders including the Lagos State Ambulance Service, Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force and the State Emergency Management Agency.

Bakare-Oki said the call centre received nearly 300 calls between January and March, but noted disruptions due to integration work on the new short code system.
