Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68
Messi’s childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, announced his death on Saturday, describing Jorge as a key figure who provided constant support and guidance throughout his son’s career.
Argentine media reports said Jorge died on Friday at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina.
Details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.
Jorge played a significant role in Lionel Messi’s development from a young footballer in Argentina into one of the greatest players in football history.
He served as his son’s first coach and was closely involved in his early football journey.
When Messi moved to Barcelona as a child to pursue his football career, Jorge accompanied him and remained a major source of support as the youngster adapted to life in Spain.
He later became Messi’s agent and was involved in several important stages of his professional career, helping manage his son’s football affairs and working behind the scenes as Messi rose to global prominence.
In a statement mourning his death, Newell’s Old Boys said Jorge’s “constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership” were crucial in supporting Lionel Messi at every stage of his journey.
Messi has previously spoken about the important role his father played in his career. In a 2022 interview with DirecTV Sports, the Argentina captain described Jorge as highly critical of him, saying that his father’s approach motivated him to keep improving.
Jorge’s influence extended beyond football, as he remained one of the closest figures in Messi’s life while the player built a career that included multiple domestic and international titles, World Cup glory with Argentina and a record eight Ballon d’Or awards.
The Messi family had previously asked the media to show “humanity” during the 2022 World Cup amid reports and speculation about Jorge’s health.
His death marks a major personal loss for Messi, who has frequently acknowledged his father’s influence on his football career and personal development.
