The Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation has hailed the second Sunday Dare Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship in Bayelsa State, which attracted more than 116 athletes from 12 states and five clubs.
The four-day competition, held from Oct. 14 to 17 in conjunction with the Bayelsa State Sports Council, aimed to showcase talent, promote youth development and strengthen mixed martial arts in Nigeria.
In an appreciation statement signed by Secretary-General Obillor Lilian, the federation said the championship ended without casualties or unforeseen incidents, crediting the outcome to effective planning, coordination and professionalism.
The federation thanked former Sports Minister and presidential adviser Sunday Dare, Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Peter Pereotubo Akpe and state Sports Commissioner Daniel Igali for their support and participation.
It also commended the National Sports Commission’s leadership, federation officials, referees, coaches, volunteers and medical personnel for helping deliver the event.
The federation congratulated Bayelsa State, Heroes Club, Delta State, Imo State and Enugu State, which it identified among the leading medal-winning teams.
It particularly praised the medical team for prioritising athletes’ health and safety and commended referees for maintaining fairness and discipline throughout the competition.
“The success of the Second Sunday Dare Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship demonstrates what can be achieved when government, sports administrators, federations, athletes, officials and stakeholders work together with a shared vision,” the statement said.
The federation also thanked the Bayelsa State Government and residents for their hospitality, saying the competition offered athletes an opportunity to demonstrate courage, discipline and competitive ability.
It reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger, more competitive and internationally respected mixed martial arts community in Nigeria.
