Nigeria's new Ambassador to Portugal, Erelu Angela Adebayo, has formally assumed her diplomatic duties after presenting her Letters of Credence to Portuguese President António José Seguro.
The ceremony took place on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Belém Palace in Lisbon, according to a statement by Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During her meeting with President Seguro, Ambassador Adebayo conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian government and people.
She reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Portugal, with particular emphasis on trade and investment, maritime security, energy, agriculture, education, cultural exchange and tourism.
The ambassador also pledged to promote economic diplomacy and deepen cooperation with Portugal on regional and global issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action and the Africa-European Union Partnership.
President Seguro welcomed Ambassador Adebayo to Portugal and reaffirmed his country's commitment to deepening relations with Nigeria.
He also acknowledged Nigeria's strategic role in Africa and its importance as a key partner in strengthening cooperation between Africa and Europe.
The Nigerian ambassador said she would work with the Portuguese government, diplomatic community, private sector and the Nigerian community in Portugal to further strengthen ties between the 2 countries and expand mutually beneficial cooperation.
The presentation of Letters of Credence formally marks the beginning of Ambassador Adebayo's diplomatic mission in Portugal.
