The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast for the week, predicting three consecutive days of thunderstorms and rain across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
Parts of the northern states, including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina, are expected to see morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Monday. By the afternoon, the rains will extend to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. NiMet warned of potential flash floods in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano.
In the central region, states like Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa will experience cloudy mornings with light to moderate rainfall on Monday. The agency highlighted a high risk of flooding in parts of Plateau State.
Meanwhile, the southern states, including Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, should expect light to moderate rainfall.
Tuesday and Wednesday Outlook
On Tuesday, the northern region will see sunny skies and patchy clouds, though thunderstorms and rains will persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and neighboring states. The central and southern regions are expected to continue experiencing moderate rainfall.
By Wednesday, the weather pattern will shift, with northern states beginning the day with sun before thunderstorms develop later on. The central region will be mostly cloudy with moderate rains, while southern states like Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River should brace for morning showers and moderate to heavy afternoon rains.
Safety Advisory
NiMet has issued several safety warnings for the public. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to activate emergency responses and avoid driving during heavy rainfall. The agency also recommends securing any loose objects, taking precautions against strong winds and low nighttime temperatures, and disconnecting all electrical appliances during a storm. The public is advised to avoid seeking shelter under tall trees.
Airline operators are also urged to obtain specific weather reports from airports for safe flight planning. For continuous updates, the public can visit the NiMet website.
