NUT FCT Directs Teachers to Join Strike Over Welfare Issues

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT wing, has ordered all primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to join the ongoing strike led by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

The action begins Monday, January 26, 2026, following a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) calling for the escalation of industrial action by all affiliated unions in the FCT.

In a communiqué signed by NUT FCT Chairman Abdullahi Shafas, Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union said it initially hesitated to join the JUAC led strike but is now compelled to support it.

“All teachers in FCT primary and secondary schools are to stay away from classrooms starting Monday,” the statement said. Teachers in Abuja city centre and surrounding areas were instructed to gather at the National Industrial Court on Gimbiya Street, Area 11, by 7 a.m. to show solidarity during a JUAC related court hearing.

The union said negotiations with authorities would continue until outstanding welfare issues such as unpaid allowances, pension and National Housing Fund deductions, and salary centralisation are resolved. The FCTA has been on strike since January 19 over these unresolved concerns, which JUAC says have affected morale and productivity among workers.
