Obi Announces Exit From ADC, Citing Internal Conflict

Peter Obi has announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crises and growing divisions within the party, while urging his supporters to remain calm.

In a message to Nigerians, Obi said his decision was not due to personal conflicts with any party leaders, adding that he still respects key figures in the party.

He, however, blamed systemic issues for his departure.

“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” Obi said.

He described the wider political climate as “increasingly toxic,” where “intimidation, insecurity, endless scrutiny, and discouragement have become normal.”

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also reflected on the pressures of public life.

Despite his exit, Obi said his mission to see a better Nigerian society remains unchanged.

Following his announcement, the Obidient Movement issued a statement calling for calm among supporters. The group said it “acknowledges the growing concerns and widespread reports” surrounding recent political developments.

It added that Obi is currently in “extensive, high-level consultations with key stakeholders, political allies, and aligned movements” to determine “the most strategic and effective path forward.”

The movement urged members not to be “swayed by speculative reports” and assured that Obi would soon address the public.

“Our strength lies in our unity and focus,” the statement said. “Let us remain steadfast as we await further communication.”
