Obidient Movement Presses Supreme Court to Resolve ADC Leadership Crisis Speedily

The Obidient Movement on Saturday called on Nigeria's Supreme Court to issue an urgent ruling on the leadership dispute crippling the African Democratic Congress, warning that continued judicial delay risks destabilizing the country's opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by National Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the pro-Peter Obi political movement said the apex court's decision to reserve judgment on the ADC leadership crisis, handed down April 22, had created a dangerous power vacuum that threatens both the party's internal cohesion and the broader viability of opposition politics in Nigeria.

"The apex court is the last refinery of justice," Tanko said.

"Any prolonged delay in pronouncing a final verdict on the ADC leadership crisis provides room for mischief, fuels factionalism, and undermines the preparations for a robust multi-party contest in the coming elections."

The ADC, a key vehicle for opposition coalition-building ahead of 2027, has been paralysed by a protracted factional dispute over its executive leadership.

The movement argued Saturday that the matter has long ceased to be an internal party affair, describing it as a question of national democratic interest.

The group specifically flagged the practical consequences of inaction, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission requires a legally recognized party leadership to engage with as primary election windows open and coalition negotiations gather pace.

Thousands of party members, the statement said, remain in a state of uncertainty with no clear authority to follow.

Saturday's statement stopped short of endorsing any particular faction in the ADC dispute but made clear the movement views judicial speed as inseparable from democratic health.

"Justice delayed in this matter is effectively democracy denied," Tanko said.

The Supreme Court has not indicated when it expects to deliver its ruling.
