The Oyo State Government on Monday launched a week long celebration to mark the state’s 50th anniversary, with an opening ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The anniversary activities, themed “Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present, and Reimagining the Future,” began on Jan. 26 and will culminate on Feb. 3 with a gala night at the Government House, Agodi, where all 17 former governors will be honored.
At the ceremony, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan, urged residents to remember the contributions of past leaders, including civilian administrators and traditional rulers, who shaped the state’s development. He also called for recognition of unsung heroes whose efforts helped build the state.
Oba Ladoja noted that the state has progressed over 50 years but said there is still work to be done. “We are not yet where we want to be,” he said, expressing hope that Oyo State could one day emulate Singapore’s achievements in education, healthcare, and job creation.
Governor Seyi Makinde described the Golden Jubilee as more than a milestone, calling it a moment for reflection and renewal. He highlighted stories shared on the state’s digital tribute wall that showcase citizens’ successes and the state’s potential.
Makinde said the celebration should not only honor the past but also set the stage for the next 50 years. He led the audience in pledges to strengthen the economy, improve infrastructure, enhance education and healthcare, and ensure peace, security and good governance.
The governor also thanked security commanders for their role in maintaining peace and encouraged citizens to participate fully in the week long activities.
The anniversary week will end with a grand finale on Feb. 3, which will feature a gala night and dinner to celebrate the state’s history and future prospects.
