PDP Holds LG Congresses in Edo, Kebbi, Reschedules Anambra, Ebonyi Exercises

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday held local government congresses across several states as part of its internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party chieftains described the exercises in Edo and Kebbi States as peaceful and orderly.

In Edo State, the PDP conducted congresses in all 18 local government areas, electing new executives and national delegates.

State Caretaker Chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who monitored the process in Benin City alongside a national panel led by Mr. Hillary Okute, hailed the exercise as transparent.

Okute also praised the congresses, describing the turnout and unity as “a new dawn for the PDP.”

In Kebbi State, PDP officials said the exercise across the 21 local government areas was marked by impressive turnout and unity.

Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu-Goronyo, who chaired the congress monitoring team, commended the orderly participation of delegates, including women and youth.

Former gubernatorial candidate Gen. Aminu Bande (rtd.) praised security agencies, INEC officials, and the media for ensuring a smooth process.

Anambra and Ebonyi Congresses Rescheduled

Meanwhile, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) announced the postponement of planned repeat ward, local government, and state congresses in Anambra and Ebonyi states.

National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said the decision was to allow more consultations with stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct.

He assured members that new dates would be announced soon and urged party faithful in both states to remain united.

Road to National Convention

The PDP is currently in the middle of a nationwide congress cycle to elect delegates and executives at the ward, local government, and state levels.

The process is expected to culminate in a national convention scheduled for November in Abuja, where the party hopes to consolidate its position as the main opposition ahead of the next general elections.
