Resident Doctors Hold Talks to Evaluate Government Response to 19-point Demand

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors will meet on Monday (today) to discuss their Memorandum of Understanding with the federal government, aimed at ending the resident doctors' strike, which is in its 17th day.

The 7 p.m. meeting will focus on NARD’s 19-point demand list, which calls for the immediate release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund and payment of outstanding salary arrears under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Resident doctors say the unpaid allowances and stalled training funding have disrupted specialist training and weakened emergency services at several teaching and federal hospitals.

NARD has also asked for a specialist allowance and clearer rules on promotions and on-call duties.

The government says it is engaging the union and has begun processing some payments to address arrears.

A recent government move to release funds was reported as part of efforts to calm the dispute.

Still, NARD says full, verifiable settlements and binding MoU terms are needed before services can safely return to normal.

The meeting of the NARD National Executive Committee will determine the extent to which the government has met its demands.

The association says it will release a communiqué after the meeting.
