Retired Police Officers Block Presidential Villa Gate Over Pension Scheme

Retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and their families on Monday blocked a gate at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in protest against their continued inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The protesters, under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, described the scheme as “fraudulent, illegal, inhumane and obnoxious,” and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign the Police Exit Bill into law.

Leading the demonstration, CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd.), said the action was to press for presidential assent to the bill passed by the National Assembly in December 2025 and transmitted in March 2026.

He said police retirees should be removed from the scheme like other security agencies, including the military and intelligence services, which he claimed have already exited the arrangement.

The retirees also described the pension system as unfair and harmful to their welfare, saying it has left many of them in difficult living conditions.

The protest adds to previous demonstrations by retired officers in Abuja over the same issue, including a similar action at the National Assembly in July 2025.
