Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Retires from International Football

William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has announced his retirement from international football.

The 31-year-old defender made the announcement on Thursday, ending his 10-year career with the team just weeks before the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

In an emotional message shared on social media, Troost-Ekong said playing for Nigeria was the greatest privilege of his life.

"The journey may end here, but my support never will," he wrote. He thanked his teammates and coaches, especially the late Stephen Keshi, who gave him his first chance to play for Nigeria in 2015.

Troost-Ekong played 83 times for the Super Eagles and scored seven goals. He was a key player in the team's defense, known for his leadership and strong performances.

He helped Nigeria win a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and led the team to a second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON, where he was named the Player of the Tournament.

His last game for Nigeria was a World Cup playoff match against DR Congo last month. Although he is stepping away from the national team, he will continue playing for his club, Al-Kholood, in Saudi Arabia.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and fans across the country have praised Troost-Ekong for his dedication and service. Many see him as a role model for young players, showing what can be achieved through hard work and love for one's country.
