Tanzania pulled off a major upset at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Banyana Banyana 2-1 in their Group B opener in Morocco.
The Twiga Stars took the lead in the 38th minute through Diana Msewa, who struck against the run of play to put Tanzania ahead.
Banyana Banyana responded just before the break, with Bambanani Mbane equalising in first-half stoppage time at 45+2 minutes to bring the game level at 1-1.
However, Tanzania had the final say, as substitute Hasnath Ubamba scored the winner in the 87th minute, sealing a famous victory for the East Africans.
Despite enjoying more possession and creating early chances, Banyana Banyana were unable to convert their dominance into goals and were punished late in the game.
The result puts Tanzania in a strong early position in Group B, while Banyana Banyana face immediate pressure in their remaining fixtures.
Defending champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, will begin their title defence against Malawi on Tuesday.
