WAFCON 2026: Tanzania Shock South Africa's Banyana Banyana in Opener

‎Tanzania pulled off a major upset at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Banyana Banyana 2-1 in their Group B opener in Morocco.

‎The Twiga Stars took the lead in the 38th minute through Diana Msewa, who struck against the run of play to put Tanzania ahead.

‎Banyana Banyana responded just before the break, with Bambanani Mbane equalising in first-half stoppage time at 45+2 minutes to bring the game level at 1-1.

‎However, Tanzania had the final say, as substitute Hasnath Ubamba scored the winner in the 87th minute, sealing a famous victory for the East Africans.

‎Despite enjoying more possession and creating early chances, Banyana Banyana were unable to convert their dominance into goals and were punished late in the game.

‎The result puts Tanzania in a strong early position in Group B, while Banyana Banyana face immediate pressure in their remaining fixtures.

‎Defending champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, will begin their title defence against Malawi on Tuesday.
