Eighteen year old Australian sprinter Gout Gout has broken a major record, winning the 200 metres title in 19.67 seconds.
The time sets a new world under 20 record and is the fastest recorded globally this year.
Gout’s performance is quicker than what Usain Bolt ran at the same age, when he clocked 19.93 seconds as a teenager.
American athlete Erriyon Knighton still holds the fastest ever under 20 time, but Gout’s run now stands as the official record under standard conditions.
Fellow Australian Aidan Murphy finished second in 19.88 seconds, making it the first race with two Australians breaking the 20 second mark.
Gout says he is relieved to finally go under 20 seconds legally and plans to focus next on the World Under 20 Championships in Oregon.
