President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace religious tolerance, peaceful coexistence and national unity as he marked Christmas Day with a goodwill message to Christians at home and abroad.
In the message released on December 25, Tinubu said Christmas offers an opportunity to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ and his message of salvation, peace, and goodwill to humanity.
He extended Christmas greetings to Christians in Nigeria and around the world and prayed for peace in the country, particularly among people of different religious beliefs.
The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting religious freedom and ensuring that no Nigerian suffers violence or discrimination because of their faith.
He said all citizens have the right to live, worship, and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity, under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of Christians to Nigeria’s development, noting that the teachings of Christ have inspired many to care for the vulnerable and less privileged.
He praised those who work to promote peace, harmony, and tolerance in their communities, saying their efforts reflect the love of Christ and the message of the Gospel.
Reflecting on his time in office since 2023, the president said he has consistently reassured Nigerians of his commitment to safeguarding the security, unity, and stability of the nation, adding that the commitment remains steadfast.
Tinubu said he has engaged with leaders of the country’s major faiths during the year, particularly amid concerns about religious intolerance and insecurity, and pledged to build on those discussions to strengthen cooperation between government and religious institutions and prevent conflict.
As Nigerians travel to celebrate the holiday with family and loved ones, the president urged citizens to exercise patience and discipline on the roads, wishing travellers a safe journey and return.
He expressed confidence in divine providence and the collective strength of Nigerians, saying the country would continue the work of building a nation that future generations can be proud of.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance.
